The Aiye -Teju village is in need of a facility where the women can give birth safely and in the right conditions. And in a country with five hospital beds per 10,000 population, the chances of the women in Aiye -Teju, Edo State to access affordable and appropriate healthcare are very little.
Akoko-Edo, formally called Akoko-Igarra (or Akoko-Oki), is the oldest singular local government that has never been split since its existence and the existence of Nigeria. Aiye -Teju is located in Okpe part of Akoko-Edo in Northern Benin, Edo State.
Currently, there is no official data of the total number of hospitals in Nigeria due to the fact that a whole lot of private hospitals in the country are not duly registered / monitored. However, a list of the federal government owned hospitals published by the Federal Ministry of Health estimates the general number to be about 24,000 hospitals although its assumed to be much more.
The Nigerian healthcare system is organized into primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare levels. The Local Government Areas (LGAs) are responsible for primary healthcare, the State Governments are responsible for providing secondary care while the Federal Government is responsible for policy development, regulation, overall stewardship and providing tertiary care.
The LGA level is the least funded and organized level of government and therefore has not been able to properly finance and organize primary healthcare, creating a very weak base for the healthcare system. Because of this, the healthcare system is very far from where it should be in Nigeria and that has had a long standing effect on the female residents of Aiye –Teju Village in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State.

Our project is about building a small local health center for these women to be able to access better healthcare when bringing life into the world. This is the main purpose of We undertaking this project. However the health center will serve many other purposes to the people of Aiye –Teju like Convenient Access to Comprehensive Primary Care, Centralize Chronic Disease Management, Professional Healthcare, among others.
A healthcare facility is very important for the development and strong disease-free future of any settlement. Therefore, we appeal to you to join us in this mission to make lives better and save the children of our future.
We would also like to indicate that this is the first of multiple healthcare projects we plan to undertake so, the journey has just begun.
